São Domingos hills and chapelOdemira · Alentejo

The hills that shape the parish landscape, with old iron mines and the ruins of São Domingos chapel at the top.

São Domingos hills and chapel

Together with the Mira River and the Torgal stream, the São Domingos hills shape the landscape of the parish of São Luís. They had mines, mainly iron, whose ore was shipped from the Casa Branca river port. (Not to be confused with the São Domingos Mine in Mértola.)

On Cerro de São Domingos, at about 380 m above sea level, next to the survey marker and about 1.7 km from the village, stand the ruins of São Domingos chapel: a small rectangular building of about 4 × 6 m, with schist walls still 1.5–2 m high.

The site is now an archaeological site, occupied in the Bronze Age and in medieval times. The chapel is mentioned in the 1758 Parish Inquiries and was excavated in 1995 and 1998.

How to get there

The Rota Vicentina circular walk "Hortas de S. Luís" has an extension to the top of the hills (an extra 4 km, there and back).
