Where to eat

Seven houses, seven stories — from the neighbourhood tavern to chef-driven cooking. The flavours of São Luís on the table, from Alentejo bread to convent desserts.

Despite its village scale, São Luís offers rare diversity: taverns rooted in Alentejo tradition, neighbourhood café-restaurants, family-run houses, and even a creative kitchen linked to the local artistic community.

We always recommend confirming opening hours and booking ahead, especially at weekends and during high season. Many of these restaurants cook to whatever is freshest on the day.

Typical flavours of the region

The cuisine of São Luís sits within the great Alentejo tradition, with its own touches as a village on the banks of the Mira. Among the dishes and products not to miss:

  • Dogfish soup — a rich fish soup, thickened with bread and coriander
  • Alentejo migas — with pork ribs, asparagus or tomato, depending on the season
  • Alentejo-style pork — black pork with clams, fried potatoes and coriander
  • Lamb stew — Alentejo lamb stewed with bread
  • Mira River fish — eel, barbel and lamprey, in season
  • Alentejo açorda — bread, garlic, coriander, poached egg
  • Convent desserts — encharcada, sericaia with plums, queijinhos do céu

Cafés, bakeries and snacks

Beyond the restaurants, the village has traditional cafés for breakfast, bakeries with wood-fired oven bread, and, at snack time, several places to find regional wine, cheeses, cured meats and conversation at an Alentejo pace.
